W.Bro. Emmanuel Slonim RIP z"l

2nd Workshipful master of Mount Carmel Lodge 44 in 1957

An obituary for the late Emanuel Slonim by the late RWB Dov Berl Herman(z"l)

I FIRST MET EMANUEL SLONIM IN 1949 AND FROM THE VERY BEGINNING WE BECAME GREAT FRIENDS, ALSO OUR WIVES AND CHILDREN. WE WORKED TOGETHER IN MANY ORGANIZATIONS, BUT MAINLY IN FREEMASONRY. WHEN I JOINED REUBEN LODGE IN 1952 TOGETHER WITH PAUL GOLDSCHMIDT (PAUL ARIELI), EMANUEL WAS PRESENT AND ONE OF THE FIRST I SAW WHEN "LIGHT" WAS RESTORED TO US ..... HOWEVER, WE WERE NOT TOO HAPPY ABOUT CERTAIN HABITS AND CUSTOMS PRACTICED IN SOME OF THE HAIFA LODGES WE USED TO VISIT. THE REGALIA WAS WORN, DISCIPLINE WANTING, NO SET SYSTEM FOR ADVANCEMENT, TOO MANY ARGUMENTS OR A CERTAIN LACK OF EXPECTED FRATERNAL RELATIONS, UNLESS SERIOUS MATTERS WERE INVOLVED, IN WHICH CASE FULL MASONIC HARMONY AND EFFORT PREVAILED. ADVANCEMENT WAS DECIDED BY A COMMITTEE OF PAST MASTERS, SOME OF THEM WHO DID NOT VISIT THE LODGE AND WERE UNINFORMED OF THE WISHES OF THE LODGE OR ITS NEEDS. AT ONE OTHER LODGE, THEY TOOK IN CANDIDATES, THREE OR MORE AT A TIME, AND IN ADDITION TO THEIR FEES AND CONTRIBUTION TO LODGE FUNDS, THESE CANDIDATES HAD TO PAY THE ENTIRE EXPENSE AT THE FESTIVE BOARD WHICH WAS USUALLY WELL ATTENDED. EMANUEL AND I, AND OTHERS JOINED US, BEGAN BOYCOTTING THE FESTIVE BOARDS, AND EVENTUALLY THE PRACTICE WAS STOPPED.
IN 1956 OUR LODGE WAS FORMED, BUT THE PREPARATIONS TOOK MANY MONTHS. EMANUEL WAS THE S.W. AND DAVID FREEMAN THE J.W. AND I WAS THE ORGANIZING SECRETARY, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, THE SECRETARY. EMANUEL AND I AND THE OTHERS AGREED, INSISTED THAT WE WOULD USE THE LADDER METHOD OF ADVANCEMENT AND THAT RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD COME FROM THE G.P.C. THAT WE WOULD HAVE NEW, EXCELLENT REGALIA THAT WOULD BE PROPERLY MAINTAINED, AND THAT ONLY ONE CANDIDATE WOULD BE INITIATED AT ONE TIME, ALL THE WORK THAT EVENING FOR HIS BENEFIT AND THAT HE WOULD BE THE GUEST OF THE LODGE AT THE FESTIVE BOARD. THAT AS PAST MASTERS WE WOULD CONTINUE TO VISIT REGULARLY, ALWAYS OFFER OUR SERVICES AND ADVICE, BUT NOT INTERFERE. THESE AND MANY OTHER THINGS, SET DOWN DURING THE ORGANIZING PERIOD AND SUBSEQUENTLY TRANSLATED INTO FACT, WERE, TO A VERY LARGE EXTENT THE IDEAS AND WORK OF EMANUEL SLONIM.
EMANUEL WAS ALSO ACTIVE IN GRAND LODGE, FILLED SEVEN OFFICES, AND FOR A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS, WAS GRAND SUPERINTENDENT OF THE HAIFA LODGES. HE WAS ALSO THE GRAND REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GRAND LODGE OF ITALY AT OUR GRAND LODGE.
EMANUEL JOINED THE PHOENICIA CHAPTER, TOGETHER WITH PAUL (PAUL ARIELI) AND MYSELF, AND FOUND THE SAME DISSATISFACTION AS HE HAD IN THE LODGES. IT WAS NOT SURPRISING, THEREFORE, AND SEVERAL YEARS LATER HE WAS A PRIME MOVER IN THE FOUNDATION OF MOUNT CARMEL CHAPTER. THIS WAS ALSO A LOT OF WORK, BUT MUCH EASIER THAN IN THE LODGE, AS MOST OF THE FOUNDER MEMBERS WERE MOUNT CARMEL BRETHREN WHO KNEW WHAT WE WERE AIMING AT. EMANUEL WAS THE FIRST PRINCIPAL IN ITS FOUNDATION YEAR.
BUT ONE THING STANDS OUT WITH HIS UNTIMELY PASSING, NAMELY, WE HAVE LOST ONE OF OUR SENIOR, FINEST AND STRONGEST LINKS IN THE MOUNT CARMEL MASONIC CHAIN. WE, WHO REMAIN, MUST STRENGTHEN THE REMAINING LINKS AND ADD NEW ONES. THEN THERE SHALL BE THAT CONTINUITY IN OUR WORK WITHOUT IMPAIRMENT WHICH IS THE UNDERLYING BASIS OF FREEMASON AND WHICH HAS MADE IT THE OLDEST AND FINEST INSTITUTION THAT HAS EVER EXISTED, AND BY SO DOING, WE WILL HAVE FULFILLED THE WISHES AND DESIRES OF EMANUEL.
